Give Sugary Drinks a Chop | Best Lifehack blog

It is commonplace to catch sight of people consuming sugary drinks such as soda, tonic or pop, soft drinks and beverages these days. While consuming them occasionally does not cause much harm to the body, getting into the habit of doing it regularly can have serious repercussions for one’s health in the long run.

According to most experts or healthcare professionals, cutting down the consumption of sugary food items or excluding them from one’s diet altogether can help one keep various health problems at bay.

Studies indicate that the consumption of sugary drinks, in most cases, is the leading cause of serious health complications such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease and tooth decay in both children and adults. Here’s how sweet drinks lead to these complications.

Obesity

The regular consumption of foods or drinks that are high in sugar is linked to obesity – in children and adults alike. Medical experts believe that the prolonged consumption of these substances can prove to be detrimental to the body mass index of an individual, thereby making them prone to obesity. High body mass index and obesity are the risk factors for life-long health complications like diabetes, heart disease and some kinds of cancer.

Cutting down the intake of these beverages, soft drinks and similar sweet foods can help shed unwanted pounds. This is the sure-fire way not to only prevent obesity but also maintain a healthy body-mass index.

Diabetes

If you are fond of taking calorie-rich foods, you may be putting yourself at the risk of developing diabetes in the long term. The caramel, the artificial sweeteners and sugar found in sweet foods and drinks reduce the insulin sensitivity in the body. This, in turn, increases the blood glucose levels in the body. When the body fails to generate insulin naturally to control the rising blood glucose levels in the bloodstream, a patient becomes diabetic.

Heart Disease

Addition of calories or sugar to the diet increases the likelihood of developing metabolic syndrome which makes one vulnerable to fatal medical conditions like a heart attack or a stroke. When one consumes a diet that has a higher concentration of calories and fat, it builds up bad cholesterol in the body. Bad cholesterol can choke the blood vessels. As a result, the normal flow of blood from different parts of the body to the heart and vice versa is blocked. This eventually leads to a heart attack or a stroke.

Tooth Decay

The ingestion of sugar contributes to tooth decay due to the production of acid caused by the bacteria that enters the mouth. These bacteria mingle with sugar to produce an acid. The combined action of both causes plaque buildup on gums and teeth. It leads to tooth decay.

Thus, as you can see it from the above, there are some serious downsides of consuming sugary drinks. Sure, giving them up at once is not easy – it may take some time. However abandoning them from your daily life slowly and steadily can help you live a longer, and a healthier life. Do you agree?
